Make Your Own Rock Candy!

By Jody Lynn Chin January 4, 2012

What you will need:

  • Wooden stick I used a skewer you can buy at any grocery store
  • Clothes pin
  • 1 cup water
  • Tall Cup
  • Sugar
  • Saran Wrap
  • Food coloring if you would like

What you need to do:

  1. Start by bringing one cup of water to a boil.
  2. Stir in 2 – 3 cups of sugar ½ cup at a time until the sugar is completely dissolved.  You have to have a little patience as this does take a little bit and you have to keep stirring.
  3. Once dissolved take off heat and let the sugar water cool for 20 min.
  4. Pour the mixture into a tall cup.
  5. Dip half the skewer in the sugar water mixture and then roll it in sugar to jump start the crystal growth.  Allow it to cool completely on the skewer so the sugar will stay on when you put it in the glass.
  6. Place skewer in the glass.
  7. Place a piece of Saran Wrap over the top of the cup (poking bottom of skewer through) and secure in place with a clothespin (suspending the skewer in the liquid).  The skewer cannot touch the bottom or sides of the of the glass.
  8. Now you just have to let it cool and put it somewhere will it will not be disturbed.  Wait for 3 – 7 days and see what happens!

*We waited for 3 days,  because my son could not wait any longer and it turned out quite well.  It looks like the real rock candy you buy at the store.  We added blue food coloring in the mixture.  I also placed it in the refrigerator for an hour because it was kind of “drippy” and it hardened right up.

Enjoy!
