Prenatal & Postpartum Exercise at the YMCA

Contrary to popular belief, being pregnant is not the time to ditch healthy eating and exercise habits. Although growing that little one takes a lot of energy, it’s not enough to compensate for literally eating for two.

Scientific studies consistently show numerous benefits of exercise during pregnancy for both the mother and the developing baby. According to Mayo Clinic, women who are in better physical health experience the following during labor and delivery:

• Easier adaptation to the lower-intensity endurance activity of early labor
• Shorter first and second stages of labor
• Enhanced pain tolerance
• Increased stamina for labor and delivery, with less perceived exertion during labor
• Lower incidences of intervention during labor
• Substantially fewer caesarian births
• Good pelvic muscle tone, which results in fewer episiotomies

Women who are recovering from childbirth also reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise after pregnancy can assist women with:

• Losing weight
• Improving cardiovascular fitness
• Restoring muscle strength
• Reconditioning abdominal muscles
• Boosting energy
• Improving mood
• Relieving stress
• Helping prevent and promote recovery from postpartum depression.

At the YMCA, we are dedicated to serving people of all ages and physical abilities. With the recent addition of prenatal and postpartum exercise classes, we are thrilled to be serving new and expectant mothers. Our instructors are certified in both prenatal and postpartum exercise, with the ability to modify classes to meet the needs of these individuals. Currently, our class offerings include Aqua Zumba, Yoga and Step, offered at a variety of times throughout the day. As always, be sure to check with your physician before beginning an exercise regime.

Active women demonstrate healthy self-care values and serve as positive role models for their children to emulate.  Interested in prenatal/postpartum classes at the Y? Visit www.bnymca.org, call 309-827-6233 or email Tiffany@bnymca.org for more information!
