Clearing the Logs and Rocks

By Carla Morris, MA, LCPC, Counselor, Easter Seals Central Illinois June 24, 2015
Whether we are talking, focusing, reading, problem solving, or any other cognitive, behavioral or emotional function, our brains are continually changing frequencies throughout our day. BrainPaint helps the brain function more effectively and more efficiently through guided brain function training.

Using the BrainPaint software, neurofeedback (a type of biofeedback that uses sensors placed on the scalp to measure brain waves) gives audio and visual feedback that involves increasing or decreasing certain brain wave frequencies. This process, which is completely holistic, non-invasive and painless, allows the brain to function with greater stability and control and enhances its function through its regulation of thoughts, feelings, and focus.

One widely-used analogy is to think of our brain functioning like a clear flowing river at its optimal performance.  We build up “logs and rocks” that block the efficient flow of the river. These “logs and rocks” come in the form of disorders, traumas, and life experiences of all kinds and require “work-arounds” that are often inefficient and diminish our potential. BrainPaint helps us train our brains to discover the most efficient ways of functioning, sometimes returning to our default, sometimes creating new pathways.

DeeAnne Reimers, a licensed clinical professional counselor at Easter Seals, used BrainPaint with her seven-year-old daughter. Lauran is in first grade and exhibited ADHD-type symptoms, primarily significant distractibility, and difficulty completing tasks. Following the completion of ten BrainPaint sessions, Reimers has noticed a significant increase in Lauran’s ability to complete tasks with only one or two requests.

Lauran’s teacher, who was unaware of the intervention, commented that she noticed Lauran’s attention had increased significantly and she was much better able to follow classroom directions, typically with only one prompt. Lauran herself has commented on the positive change, saying that she likes being able to listen better and, mostly, no longer to be the last student in her class to finish eating lunch and returning the classroom following restroom breaks.

Since the brain is the master regulator, most people will enjoy benefits from neurofeedback depending on their objectives. Research has shown BrainPaint to be effective in the following applications, as well as many others:
  • Depression, Grief and Loss
  • Anxiety, Fears and Stress
  • Feelings of being Overwhelmed
  • Impulsive Behavior
  • Obsessions
  • Concentration, Focus and Organization
  • Low Energy and Chronic Fatigue
  • Insomnia and Sleep Benefit
  • Relationships and Social Confidence
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD)
Most people notice improvements within the first five to eight sessions, but for lasting and often permanent results, 20 - 30 sessions are usually recommended. A treatment protocol is developed first through an evaluation of 90 questions. A typical session lasts about 30 - 45 minutes and is always coupled with individual therapy prior to and at the completion of each session.

Neurofeedback has helped people with serious, and sometimes debilitating, neurological problems when no other therapies seemed to work!
